Philip St. John Basil Rathbone
1892-1967

In 1914 he married Marion Forman. They had a son Rodion in 1915 but were separated a few years later.During World War I Basil was awarded the Military Cross for his service in France. Unfortunately his younger brother, John, was killed in action.

After the war Basil continued his work, touring with the New Shakespeare Company where he was given many top roles including his favorite of Romeo, in Romeo and Juliet. In 1921 Basil made his film debut in The Fruitful Vine. Despite his success in film, Basil's love for the stage was to continue throughout his entire career. After the opening of a Broadway hit The Swan in 1923, Basil met Ouida Bergere they married 3 years later and would prove to be a devoted couple.

Basil's many films included rolls in David Copperfield (1934); A Tale of Two Cities (1935); Captain Blood (1935); and Adventures of Robin Hood, The (1938).

Unfortunately it was Basil's appearances as the "definitive" Holmes that would typecast him into a role he would never be able to leave. In his autobiography, Basil states,
"Had I but one Holmes picture... I should probably not be as well known... But in myself as an artist, I should have been well content."

Basil passed away on July 21, 1967.

Basil was born on June 13, 1892, to Edgar and Anna Rathbone of Johannesburg South Africa. His father, a mining engineer, was accused of being a spy during the Boer War forcing the entire family, now including two younger siblings, Beatrice and John, to flee back to London. It was here that Basil attended the acclaimed Repton school and began his pursuit and love for the theater. In 1911 Basil joined his cousins theater company and made his stage debut in Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew.

Basil grew TIRED of his role as the great detective, but was to live in Sherlock's shadow for much of his life.
He was so TYPECAST that fans often asked him to sign autographs as "Holmes" and NOT as Rathbone.
